MIDTERM:
The final exercise of the 2D composition unit of this course involves the use of texture.
1. Pick a compositional principle that you have not used before
2. Using an A3 base in portrait orientation, draw a frame (with pencil) leaving margins of 2,5 cm on top and 1,5 on the other three sides.
3. Your name and the title of your composition should be written outside the frame as in your previous composition.
4. Use 5-6 textures that you have created to design your new composition. Make sure that you can delineate interpenetration of geometrical shapes using the appropriate textures.
FINAL:
The final exercise of this term involves all the basic design principles that you have learned so far including compositional principles, color and texture. The assignment evolves step by step but the final design will be a nodal spatial organization based on a compositional principle of your choice (balance, contrast or hierarchy: symmetry is not allowed in any category)
1. Choose your compositional principle
2. Design a high density node
3. Reproduce the same node 3 or 4 times which you will use in changing sizes and orientations – depending on your chosen principle.

Brief
ARCH 1110 Basic Design in Architecture I is a compulsory studio-course given online in the first semester of the architectural curriculum at Yaşar University, undergraduate program of the Department of Architecture.
The main aim of the studio is to introduce students to the culture and practices of design and help them explore and experience the fundamental approaches, skills and knowledge of the field. Students will learn basic design elements such as form, color, texture, structure, light and material, while conducting critical studies in relevant concepts such as perception, narrative and temporality. Here, the aim is to help students gain a critical understanding of design, generate unique design approaches and develop ways to realize them through systemic thinking and decision-making processes.
The process of the course is as follows:
Concretization: from a concept to an object
Abstraction: from an object to a concept
Design analyses: elements and order
Analysis and synthesis: pattern
Analysis and synthesis: pattern (with color/texture)
2D composition: principles, elements and tools
2D composition: principles, elements, tools and color
3D composition: principles, elements, tools
3D composition: principles, elements, tools and color
3D composition: principles, elements, tools, color, material
