ARCH 1115 Introduction to Architecture is a compulsory course given online in the first semester of the architectural curriculum at Yaşar University, undergraduate program of the Department of Architecture.
The main aim of the course is examining and comprehending the basic vocabulary and principles of architectural design as a specialized discipline with interdisciplinary links. The course covers the examination of the works of design, art and architecture from various cultures and historical periods to provide a visual repertoire for comparative analyses in the discursive, social, cultural, technological and spatial contexts. Seeing the larger picture, that is, the context of the discipline of architecture with the social, cultural, aesthetic, and technical causes-and-effects refers to the scope of the course: this picture can be read by analyzing the elements of design and space, and figuring out their relationships with the whole.
The course is an integrative part of the studio of ARCH 1110 Basic Design in Architecture I. Therefore, the topics and content of both courses are undertaken in parallel to each—ARCH 1115 provides the studio exercises with theoretical bases.
Upon successful completion of this course, the enrolled students will be gaining the following knowledge, skills and competences:
– To explain basic concepts of architectural design,
– To use architectural terminology appropriately,
– To understand and analyze architectural texts and representations,
– To describe the social, and interdisciplinary context of architecture as a profession,
– To analyze and discuss an architectural work by using the basic concepts of architectural design.
– Midterm: The students are responsible from all of the issues discussed in the lectures, assignments, and from all information written in the portfolios by the students, until the evaluation dates.
– Term Project: The students will submit only one project in the term, which will be an individual study. The project will comprise the preparation and submission of the digital portfolio. Therefore, the students should create digital portfolios in proper sizes and formats (for example, multiples of A size in .ppt format) throughout the term to make their designs and write their notes about the lecture-topics and to collect the subsidiary photographs of their sketches, drawings, images regularly on it.

Assignments: The homework/studio-work assignments will be weekly exercises, and cover the students’ individual answers to the questions related with the contents of the lectures.
